I didn’t set out to become an artist, it was more like art found me. I had always enjoyed the visual experience of art, but it didn’t occur to me as something I should pursue.
A drawing class changed that. I enjoyed it so much that I took an intensive four day drawing workshop with Thomas Anfield. From the drawing, came the desire for colour. After much investigation, I decided on acrylic as my medium and haven’t looked back. I love the flexibility acrylics offer: the way they allow me to achieve the softness of a water colour, the textured thickness of impasto, or any imaginable approach in between.
My background doesn’t include formal art education but, over the years, I have found pleasure in many creative pursuits, including working in stained glass and decorative painting. I have taken photography courses and they have proven to be invaluable in helping to capture the subjects of my work. I have taken classes and workshops with the Vancouver Academy of Art, The Canadian Federation of Artists, and with Cheryl Fortier, at her Parker Street studio.
I love painting flowers and landscapes, but a meaningful or interesting still life can also seize my attention. My goal is always to capture the light, no matter what the subject. Light can change something mundane into a thing of beauty. This is both a challenge and my obsession.
