Jennifer Harwood

Jennifer’s first introduction to art was through music, but her first passion was drawing and painting. She explored formal training through junior and senior high school and attended the Emily Carr summer intensive foundation program. Jennifer went on to get her degree at Simon Fraser University at the School for Contemporary Arts, majoring in dance. In 2000, with a desire to get back to visual art, she enrolled in the graphic design program at Vancouver Community College while at the same time started to take more art classes through such places as the Federation of Canadian Artists (which she is now an active status member) and through her own private study.

The most challenging aspect of writing an artist's statement is trying to put my experience with paint, brush and canvas into words. It is a very personal relationship/connection and you hope these series of precious moments will translate into an interesting and successful piece of artwork. But like all relationships you have your good and difficult times, which the paintings will show. But let me try here to sum up where I have been and where I hope to go. When I started to take painting seriously (in 2000), I explored different mediums (pastels, acrylic and watercolour) with a definite foundation in landscape as a subject. Since then, I have found abstraction to be my inspiration and a path I very much want to explore. Not wanting to abandon the landscape and struggle to find a new foundation from which to work, I reflected over past paintings to find a foundation that would influence and support the direction of future work. Some artist’s work that I admire include Clyfford Still, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, Patrick Heron, Gordon Smith, Michael den Hertog and Don Farrell.
