Roberta Anderson

Creating art is my playtime.

Visual art was always a part of my elementary classroom. I found my students inspiring and fearless. One of my favourite questions in art class was, “What if I did this…?” And away they would go to explore their ideas. This is the kind of energy I dreamed of taking with me into retirement.

Over the years, I have taken many visual art courses through UBC and Kwantlen, and when I find an artist whose work I admire I will try and take a course or two with them to help me figure out my own sense of style. While I worked full-time, I took evening courses from high school art teacher Doreen King. It was the lessons that I learned from her that had the most impact on my teaching of art and my enjoyment of the creative process.

Just after retirement, I was lucky enough to discover the Peninsula Sketchers in White Rock, a group where we casually get together and work on honing our drawing skills. Courses through the South Surrey White Rock Art Society have been very helpful in my learning journey. Recently, I joined the Vancouver Art Guild and look forward to working with this talented group of people.

Meanwhile, I will continue to play with many different mediums, and endeavour to be as fearless as my former students!

For me the creative process is an emotional experience. I enter into a personal relationship with my paintings, one in which the painting speaks to me as much as I inform the spirit of the painting. I use acrylic paints and various mediums to create texture and interest, and I begin with no preconceived ideas as to the final creation. Rather, I embark on a journey with the canvas and paints, never quite knowing where we are going. Working in an intuitive and instinctive way, I always strive to bring about an ethereal expression, evoking mystical emotions from those viewing my work.

I am predominantly a self-taught artist, though I have attended numerous workshops both with local and international artists, all of whom have provided expert guidance and advice.

I have taken part in many juried and non-juried shows. My paintings may be found in private collections in Vancouver, the UK, Sweden, Switzerland, New Zealand and Australia.

Sepideh Bordian

A child of the 80s, I was born in Tehran during the Iran-Iraq War, and left with parents fearful of the present and hopeful of another. Vancouver is where I have since lived, and where I came to painting later in my career. I spent a decade in the corporate world but always knew that opportunity was elsewhere. Since 2018, art has been the whole of my work. I paint in Vancouver from my studio and outdoors. The places to which I travel become series of their own, in paint and in pencil, observed in person and captured authentically.

Growing up between two separate worlds left a dissonance that runs through everything I paint. It is not a subject. It is a way of seeing. I am tied to a country to which I cannot return, and every stroke either mirrors an anxiety born from this, or answers a calling from it.

Oil is the material that has the depth to hold those feelings. It stays wet long enough to allow emotional refinement, as colours blend into each other on the canvas and evolve to my vision. Charcoal and graphite are often where I first work, creating a composition that sets my intent for the work that follows. I delve into watercolour now and then for the opposite sensation entirely: moments, light, transience.

Often my art starts outside, on location, plein air. The light moves constantly and endlessly, and most of my role is deciding what to keep and what to let go. I seek the moment just before there is too much, a point where one more stroke would weaken the painting instead of improving it. The feeling of a brushstroke so exactly right that it stays with me is what keeps me at the easel, from the last one to the next one.

For as long as I can remember I have been engaged in art making. However since my retirement from teaching, I now have the gift of time and I enjoy being a full time artist.

I am a printmaker and my prints are mostly: woodblock, linocut, and monotype prints. I love exploring processes, techniques, combining print methods and discovering new pathways. Printmaking embraces the element of surprise. Even in an edition of relief prints each is original and unique. Besides editions I enjoy mixed media prints that use collage and mark making along with monotype or relief. My work has been inspired by music, nature and human narratives.

Art and Art Education have both been passions all of my adult life. I have been inspired by the creativity of children and adult artists I have taught, which leads me to be playful with materials myself. I have a BFA from Emily Carr School of Art and a B.Ed and M.Ed from UBC in Early Childhood Education. I divide my time between making art in my home studio and sharing art out the community.

I belong to Artists in Our Midst, Federation of Canadian Artists, Craft Council of British Columbia, Avenue for the Arts (AVA), and recently, the Vancouver Art Guild. I enjoy sharing my work as it evolves and changes in direction and I hope that you enjoy it too.

Ann Carroll

I think I am an eclectic (maybe the better word is scattered!) painter. I paint whatever catches my attention. Hence, you will see a variety of subject matter on my pages. The unifying element is colour.

I first started painting over twenty years ago. Like most beginners, I started with watercolours, not knowing that it was the most difficult medium to conquer. Many years of lessons from local Vancouver artists and teachers, helped me on my way. Now, I paint almost exclusively in oils, but still use the same palette as for watercolours. While the latter have an extraordinary translucency and provide many wonderful surprises in their application, the buttery feel and richness of oils is unmatched.

In addition to being a member of the Vancouver Art Guild, I am an Exhibiting Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists.

Judy Fletcher

Growing up in Ontario, Judy discovered a passion for drawing the world around her. This ability to draw enabled her to increase her powers of observation. Working in the health care field for thirty years kept her very busy, leaving little time for anything other than observation. Then, six years ago, Judy discovered the joy of colour when she began using water media: paints, inks and water-soluble pencils.

Many of Judy’s detailed paintings are subjects that are easily overlooked. She has a soft spot for toys and advertisements from early in the 20th century. She expresses her ideas with clarity and precision, but with an underlying sense of humour.

Lu Gan

When my medical research career ended abruptly due to repetitive injuries to my right hand, I could not even hold a pen or pencil. At the time, my youngest child was taking weekly art classes. Sometimes when I dropped her off at art class, I would stay to watch. One day, I decided to try a little sketching myself. At first, my hand tired easily, but I was surprised to find that gradually, I could use it more and more! More importantly, I found my passion for art!

Since then, I have taken private drawing lessons from an inspiring and dedicated teacher, Sipei Teng, an Associate Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists (AFCA). With her encouragement and support, I have recovered from my injury and discovered my new passion. My preferred mediums are pencil and acrylic. Through my art, I want to share the inspiration I get from the beauty of all creatures under the Light.

Painting has always been an integral part of my life. As a child, I would rather be engaged in art than anything else. Art helps me to understand, process, and express my inner and outer world.

Sometimes being able to see things from a different perspective can change the whole landscape of an idea, place, or thing. That's what my art practice is about.

I love painting with oils. The sensory experience of loading my brush, the smoothness as I put my brush to canvas, and the butter-like glistening of the paint. I also like exploring and experimenting with other mediums- sometimes using them alone or in combination.

My work is diverse as I explore and work out my relationship with and to my subject matter. It includes the representational to the abstract. I put no limits or rules on what I can paint or how I should paint and this allows the painting to grow and evolve.

Being part of that process brings me creative freedom and joy.

I can't believe I've been painting for some 25 years and all of it in watercolour - that demanding but ultimately satisfying medium !

Since I started in approximately 2000, I've been to workshops and have studied under 2 great teachers - one in the UK and one here in Vancouver. Otherwise my art education ended in Grade 10.

But I have always liked using my hands and was a potter and tried many crafts before falling into watercolour painting.

And now I've added paper collaging to my activities, challenging my sense of composition, design, colour and pattern. My watercolours reflect my serious side but my collages are usually more light-hearted and fun.

Art has made me look more closely at our world and has brought me so many wonderful friendships as well as satisfying my creative energy.

Beverly Grice

I grew up on a farm near Stratford, Ontario and moved to Vancouver to pursue a career as a dietitian in BC until my retirement.

I am a self-taught artist who continues to be awed by the diverse beauty of Nature here on the West Coast of British Columbia. I draw inspiration from my travels and experience of our coastal environment. This includes everything from seascapes and landscapes to flowers and mushrooms. For the past several years I have been working on a collection of winter themed paintings for our Christmas card

My artistic development began in the 80s as a welcome diversion from work commitments. I work mostly with watercolour as this medium is both versatile and challenging. Occasionally I have to use other water based mediums such as acrylic, gouache or collage to get the effect that I want for a particular image.

Since retiring from my career as a health professional I have studied with many local artists in their studio or workshops offered through the Federation of Canadian Artists, Gibsons School of Art, the Phoenix Art Workshop or online courses.

Whether I am with others or alone, in the great outdoors or in the studio, I find painting is a joyful centering experience.

I belong to the Brock House Artists Group, and am a supporting member of the Federation of Canadian Artists.

Lynda J. Henderson

Before ever painting, Lynda Henderson was honoured in a native naming ceremony and given the two spirit names: Whitefeather and Painted Horse Woman; and she was warned to be prepared for her life to change. Shortly thereafter she started to paint. Imagine having something in your life through which you could experience intense spirit, passion, joy, frustration, fun, sensuality and magic.

Her work, in acrylics, using bold, bright colours is in large and small sizes. "As nature is unlimited, so is my palette," she says. Lynda joined the Vancouver Art Guild in the fall of 2000. A trip to France and Spain in 2002 opened her eyes to a visual history of the great masters.

Summer of 2006 she displayed and sold her art in Stanley Park. In 2007 she became a part of Artists In Our Midst. Her unique art studio, a 20 foot yurt, is her pride and joy.

Ann Hilton

As a child my parents always encouraged me in my art. I still recall as a child in Grade 1 depicting my impression of the pipe organ from a class trip to a cathedral. When my family lived in France in the 50’s, I took lessons from a French woman artist in oils. I have lived in Ottawa, France, Camp Borden, Kingston, Toronto, Austin Texas and Vancouver. Since my retirement as a professor from the School of Nursing at U.B.C., I have had more time to pursue my art interests. I am enjoying the challenge immensely.

Watercolour is an excellent medium for reflecting the wonders and mysteries of our world. It allows for the freedom of colours to mix and mingle to create wonderful scenarios that can be both exhilarating and relaxing. I have focused on watercolour for many years and have never stopped learning from it.

My subject matter focuses on nature and representing that subject in expressive ways. I love to travel so the many photos I take as I journey serve as food for thought and challenge.

Sandra Hopley

Sandra Hopley is an artist located in Vancouver, British Columbia. She grew up building forts and climbing tees in the woods, and her love for the outdoors has only intensified over the years. When she moved to British Columbia and began hiking in the wilderness, she knew she had to find a way to capture its beauty and magnificence.

An avid plein air painter, Sandra Hopley aims to transport the viewer to scenes that they wouldn’t otherwise experience, whether they be grand vistas or intimate corners of the forest.

“I find painting outdoors extremely challenging, but always rewarding whether or not my painting is successful. I feel so alive when I’m alone with my dog, painting the light and essence of the landscape before me.”

Plein air paintings are usually completed in one session, on location, and often contain a particular freshness and magical sense of place. Sandra has travelled extensively and believes plein air painting has enabled her to develop the ability to transfer the emotions she feels on location into her studio paintings.

Peter McGill

Born in Ottawa but grew up in several parts of the world, my father being a career diplomat with the Canadian Government.

My post secondary education was in the field of architecture, hence the architectural theme in a lot of my work.

I worked in various architectural offices in Ottawa and Vancouver for the past 50 years and have just recently retired.

I have always dabbled in acrylic and oil painting but didn’t feel comfortable in the watercolour medium until I took a course at Emily Carr several years ago.

My wife is from Bosnia and Croatia and we have traveled extensively in this region over the past ten years, which has inspired much of my work.

I am a member of The Federation of Canadian Artists and have had works accepted in several juried exhibitions.

Gillian Olson

Gillian Olson, AFCA

Born in Guernsey (Channel Islands), I moved to the Vancouver area as a child. Art has always been a pleasure but since retirement it is the passion and focus of my life.

Watercolour is my medium often combined with ink. I either mat and frame my watercolours or mount them on cradled panels and varnish them. I continue to experiment with new ways to display my work.

I live close to Spanish Banks and Pacific Spirit Park and draw inspiration from the urban wilderness nearby. The West Coast is a recurring theme in my work, whether the spark comes from a walk on the banks of the Fraser River, a paddle along Jericho Beach or a trip to Haida Gwaii. I capture images with my camera, and they inspire both my art and my blog.

I am a Signature Member (AFCA) of the Federation of Canadian Artists, a member of the South Delta Artists Guild (Gallery Committee co chair) and a member of the Brock House Artists Group.

I participate gallery shows (FCA and SDAG) and small group and solo shows in small commercial venues. My work is in collections nationally and internationally.

Elaine Rosstrom

Having grown up loving art ever since she was young, Elaine had taken traditional art classes from a very young age of 5 and continued on through her highschool years. The art mediums explored included pencil, acrylic, watercolour, oil, and charcoal. After graduating, she studied communication design at Emily Carr University before starting her career in graphic design.

Though taking an art hiatus for quite a while, she started exploring abstract art in the last couple years as a way to destress from work, and has since found an exciting, fresh love for this new expression of art.

Jane Scott

I was born and raised in a small, Northern Ontario mining town where all forms of creative expression from music to fine art were nurtured and encouraged. Art had always been such an integral part of my life that I almost took it for granted. I finished high school, went on to university, married, raised three sons and worked passionately in the Infant Development field for over 30 years before I realized there was an artist within me.

A few years prior to my retirement in 2012, my wonderfully supportive husband surprised me with a watercolour weekend on magical Quadra Island, BC. I was hooked immediately and have painted daily ever since. Mostly self taught, I find my inspiration through workshops, travel and small group painting sessions in the community and the homes of fellow artists. The freedom and yes, the surprise of water colour fascinates me and every project is like opening a present. My painting subjects are as varied as my interests and the exploration of colour and technique give life and movement to my paintings.

Mary Stott

I have painted for pleasure for many years. Originally a watercolourist, I now work mostly in acrylic. I enjoy painting representational landscapes inspired by the dramatic scenery of the Pacific Northwest and Canadian Rockies. In recent years, I have also begun creating mixed media abstracts, intrigued by the interaction of colour, shape and texture on the painting surface.

As an artist, much of my enjoyment comes from the fact that each painting I start presents its own challenges and an opportunity to learn something new about the processes and materials I am using.

Alyson Thorpe

Inspired by the beauty and fragility of nature, Alyson Thorpe is passionate about painting watercolour florals. Watercolour is Alyson's medium of choice because she enjoys its transparency, freshness, and expressive colour. Her delicate style and impressionistic designs attract people to her work and she delights in a successful painting that "glows."Alyson began her exploration into the world of art at a night school class entitled "Drawing for the Completely Intimidated" and continued with drawing classes at the Alberta College of Art and Design. Turning her focus to watercolour, she had the privilege of private lessons with Elsie Thorson and has taken a multitude of watercolour workshops over the years. She had the pleasure of travelling and studying with Karlyn Holman in France, Italy and Ireland. Locally Alyson has attended workshops sponsored by South Surrey White Rock Art Society, Coupeville Art Centre, Straitside Studio in Sequim, Washington,Vancouver Academy of Art, and Daniel Smith Art Supplies in Seattle; to name a few.Alyson offers private watercolour lessons at her home studio in White Rock. As well as Vancouver Art Guild she is a member of South Surrey and White Rock Art Society and Westcoast Calligraphy Society.

Claudine Viallon

I have always been interested in art.

I was born in France, and as a young student in Paris, I took Art History in « Le Louvre ». I had the opportunity to visit many museums and art galleries.

After a career as journalist, filmmaker and teacher, I came back to painting.

Over the years, I took many art classes ( Shabbolt Centre, Emily Carr continuing education and a few community centres.)

I like to work with watercolor, acrylic, printmaking, collage.

Painting let me explore the many ways I can see and understand our world. My goal is to keep learning and hopefully improving.

One of my favorite quotes is the one I learned from an art teacher: He said: « My job is to take you inside the voice». When I heard it I thought. That’s what I like to work on. Get inside my voice and paint what I see from there.

Being part of the Artists community is a wonderful opportunity to see what others are doing and learn from each other.

I am honored and grateful to be part of the Vancouver Art Guild.

Pat Vickers

“To discover a new passion in mid life is one of life’s greatest gifts. Watercolour has captivated me for many reasons…the whiteness and limitless possibilities of a blank sheet of paper, the way the pigments mix with water, the challenge to control the flow, the translucency of the medium, the delight in “lucky accidents”, the discovery of new techniques, the lesson of patience, the joy in learning, and the opportunity to meet, study and paint with a wonderful group of talented people. Recently my work has become more semi-abstract and I am enjoying working and experimenting in this freer style.”

Pat is a member of the Vancouver Art Guild and the Westcoast Calligraphy Society, and a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. She has been involved in numerous group exhibitions and has had solo showings in Vancouver. Pat works out of her studio in Vancouver’s West End. Her paintings are in private collections in Canada and the United States.

Beatrice Watson

Beatrice Watson moved from Santiago, Chile, to South Africa and began painting full time in 1982. In 1990, Beatrice and
her family immigrated to North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The direction of Beatrice's work has been painting
and drawing of various subject matters in watercolours, acrylics and pastels. Currently Beatrice's medium of choice is
acrylic. Through constant experimentation she has discovered her own way and developed her individual style.

Beatrice's approach to painting is to use a great deal of intuition and inventiveness. She wants her paintings to inspire
contemplation and to say new things every time you look upon them. The colours in Beatrice's paintings attract people and
draw them into her art. The gestural strokes and overlays of colours create a loose effect that attracts your
imagination. Her paintings look simple but are not. They come deep from within her soul and she struggles to make every
stroke perfect and right. Intuition tells her when she has finished the painting.

Being creative has always been a way of life for me. Early on I created unique fabric tapestries and then explored the wonderful world of ceramics.

My desire to explore new creative opportunities led me to the exciting world of acrylics. Using strong colours allows me to bring out the individuality of each piece.

Initially my inspiration came from experiences I had as a child. I was inquisitive and when I would see a beautiful home, an old inn, an old tumble down shed in the woods or an old tug boat just waiting to go out to sea – I would wonder what memories or secrets are hidden inside. I now find myself exploring new subjects to paint, which are presenting their own unique challenges.

Claudette Young

Over the years, I have found pleasure in many creative pursuits. from creative writing to working in stained glass, decorative painting, and photography. I have taken classes and workshops with the Vancouver Academy of Art, the VSB, the Canadian Federation of Artists, and with Cheryl Fortier and other artists.

Working in acrylics, my subject matter varies according to what inspires me and makes me want to pick up my brush. My subject matter can range from a detailed and realistic work to an exploration of more abstract ideas. I enjoy the flexibility of acrylic paint: the way it allows me to achieve the softness of a water colour, or the textured thickness of impasto, or any imaginable approach in between. Acrylics also lend themselves well to mixed media work.

I have been a member of the Vancouver Art Guild since 2010. I have been grateful for the opportunities the Guild has given me to share artistic goals and interests, to gain more art knowledge through workshops and other educational opportunities, and to contribute to the community through the Guild's charitable efforts in the area of the arts. And, most of all, to share the joy of art with like minded friends.

James Young

I have made lots of paintings, drawings and photos over the years. Many thanks to all my teachers and fellow students for their guidance and feedback.

My ideas about pictures keep changing.

Matisse thought paintings could be as comfortable as a favorite old arm chair.

Goya and others thought art could protest against war, hunger, social injustice.

Tibetan Buddhists create elaborate sand paintings, then scatter them to the winds. Not good for sales, but great for meditations on impermanence.

These days, some of the most meaningful images to me are the cartoons in a great little newspaper, The Funny Times—many of them insightful, truly worth a thousand words. (Check the paper out at:www.funnytimes.com)

My point? Simply that we have a wealth of choices in making pictures and enjoying them.
